Richard Dybeck

Richard Dybeck (* 1. September 1811 in the parish Odensvi, community Köping ; † 28. July 1877 in Södertälje ) was a Swedish archaeologist , anthropologist and author of the first two stanzas of the Swedish National Anthem Du Gamla .

Life

After school in Västerås , the son of a pastor studied law at Uppsala University and was judge at Svea hovrätt in 1834 . Despite his legal training, Dybeck was very interested in runes and rune stones and did research in the archaeological field. In 1868 he discovered the rune stone from Yttergärde in Orkesta in the Swedish province of Uppland . Throughout his life he was the deputy mayor of Torshälla and Eskilstuna and the editor of the archaeological journal Runa .

Du gamla, Du fria was originally a folksong without text , which was recorded by Dybeck in the Swedish province of Västmanland and, with two text stanzas, premiered in Stockholm on November 13, 1844 .

Dybeck was a member of the Kungliga Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Academies in Stockholm.
