Runestone from Stenkvista

The runestone of Stenkvista , referred to as the runestone Sö 111, stands near the church of Stenkvista, two kilometers east of Skogstorp in Södermanland in Sweden . It features a depiction of Thor's hammer Mjolnir . The rune stone is one of the few rune stones in Scandinavia that has a dedication to Thor. Most of the rune stones date from the late Viking Age (800–1050 AD). However, the inscription of stones began in the 4th and lasted until the 12th century.

description

Runestone Sö111 with Thorhammer at the church of Stenkvista
Åby's runestone with a hammer and a mask

The 2.2 m high rune stone is made of granite . It is classified as a serpentine ribbon stone, where (most) of the text is in ribbons of snakes. The rune master arranged the design here so that the runes þiuþmunt (for the name of the man) and Fathur * sin (for "her father") are under the hanging Thorhammer. The Thor's hammers carved on several runestones in Sweden and Denmark were applied, perhaps as a pagan reaction to the use of the Christian cross on other runestones. The runic text says that the stone is a memorial made by three sons to their father Þjóðmundr . Two pagan gods appear as theophoric name elements in two listed names. The name Freygeirr is translated as "Freyr's Sperr" and Þorgautr as "Thor God". Freygeirr is also the name of a Viking chief who, around 1050, brought Leidangs to Finland and Estonia.
