Runnin 'Wild is a pop song written by Arthur Harrington Gibbs (music), Joe Gray and Leo Wood (lyrics) and published in 1922 by the New York music publisher Leo Feist. It has since become a widely played jazz standard .

The phrase running wild at the time, to women speaking, was a euphemism for promiscuity ; the phrase was the theme song of the music revue of the same name.

Musicians who covered the song from late 1922 included Joseph Samuels (Paramount), Nathan Glantz ( Pathé ), Ted Lewis (Columbia), the Original Memphis Five (Paramount), The Virginians (Victor), Ladd's Blue Aces (Gennett ), in England Jack Hylton's Grosvenor Dance Orchestra (Zonophone), in Berlin Eric Borchard and the Neger Jazz Orchester [Sic] (Vox) and in Paris Billy Arnold's Novelty Jazz Band (Pathé). A studio band around Phil Napoleon , Jimmy Lytell, Frank Signorelli recorded the song as The Cotton Pickers for Brunswick and as The Southland Six for Vocalion Records . Also hillbilly bands like James Cole's Washboard Four (Champion 40047) played a song.

As early as the 1930s, Runnin 'Wild a . a. covered by the Duke Ellington Orchestra , Django Reinhardt , Red Nichols and Nat Gonella ; The discographer Tom Lord lists a total of 383 (as of 2016) cover versions in the field of jazz , the later recordings by Ernestine Anderson , Benny Goodman , Abbey Lincoln , Jimmie Lunceford , Glenn Miller , Slam Stewart , Ralph Sutton and Art Tatum are particularly noteworthy . Marilyn Monroe interpreted the song in Billy Wilder's comedy Some Like It Hot .
