South bridge

The South Bridge (Nan Cha Bridge ) is an earth-anchored suspension bridge with a span of 1,490 m. When completed in 2005, it became the third longest suspension bridge in the world and the longest in China. Only the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge in Japan with 1,991 m and the Storebælt Bridge over the Great Belt in Denmark with 1,624 m are longer . The height of the pylons is 215 m above the river level. They were founded on rock at a depth of 57 m. The wire ropes on which the deck of the bridge hangs consist of 164 strands each of 127 individual wires, each 5.3 mm in diameter. Each wire rope weighs around 21,000 t. The main girder of the bridge consists of a box girder with a construction height of 3 m. The deck width of the bridge is 39.2 m and has six lanes and a narrow footpath on each side for maintenance purposes. The clearance below the bridge is around 50 m. This will also allow large ships to reach the planned deep port in Shanghai in the future. World icon

North bridge

The north bridge is a cable-stayed bridge . For reasons of cost, this design was chosen for the shorter span of the main part of only 406 m. Together with the two 176 m long side parts, the total length of the north bridge is 758 m. In contrast to the south bridge, the height below the bridge is only 18 m. The pylons of the north bridge are 150 m above the river level.

Overall complex

Siyezhou Island lies between the two bridges. The total length of the bridge complex is around 35.66 km.

Building history

Construction of the bridge began in October 2000 and was completed ahead of schedule. The construction cost was 5.8 billion yuan (about US $ 700 million). The Runyang Bridge opened on April 30, 2005. The construction project manager was Wang Jun, chief engineer of the construction authority (Jiangsu Provincial Yangtze River Highway Bridge Construction Commanding Dept).
