Ruphus was a jazz rock band from Norway .

Band history

In 1970 Kjell Larson and Asle Nilsen met in Oslo at an open air festival; after a further 2 years, Kjell and Asle teamed up with other musicians and began to write their own pieces for Ruphus. In 1973 they were signed to Polydor Norway, and in the same year recorded their first LP called New Born Day .

Ruphus toured Norway until 1974. Her newfound popularity brought her attention to television and in 1974 produced a 45-minute TV special.

In the same year Ruphus went on their first tour of Germany and immediately afterwards recorded their second LP in the studio in their home country. Ranshart was their first export album and also garnered some international attention.

In 1976 they produced their third album Let Your Light Shine . Her new style was unmistakable. Ruphus had developed into a jazz rock band with the help of rock and jazz guitarist Terje Rypdal as a producer. The German Metronome brought Ruphus to the first Brain Festival on February 26, 1977 in Essen , where they played in front of around 8,000 visitors.

In 1976 singer Gudny Aspaas left the formation because of her pregnancy. Pianist Haakon Graf also left the band with the intention of going into business for himself. Sylvi Lillegaard joined the band for Aspaas, while Graf was replaced by Jan Simonson. A year later, in 1977, her fourth work came on the market. Inner Voice was again produced by Terje Rypdal, and another year later, in 1978, the first in-house production "Flying Colors" appeared.

At the end of this year there were a few changes in line-up: singer Gudny Aspaas returned, the keyboards were now occupied by Kjell Rönningen. Udo Dahmen was hired for the drums, but left the band again to join Kraan and cleared his place for Björn Jensen. The first Best of Ruphus LP appeared and Hot rhythms & high notes was published in Germany.

After a short tour in 1978, during which they were also guests at the second Brain Festival in Essen, the group recorded their last LP in an English studio - Man Made .

In 1996 “Ruphus - Colored dreams & hidden schemes” appeared, a double CD with new recordings of old songs.

In February 2010 Ruphus played a concert at the Norwegian club Rockefeller .
