Ruslan Boryssowytsch Chomtschak ( Ukrainian Руслан Борисович Хомчак * 5. June 1967 in Rivne , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian Lieutenant General , Chief of Staff and Commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and in this capacity a member of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine .

Life

Ruslan Khomchak was born in 1967 in the western Ukrainian city of Rivne. He graduated from the Moscow Higher Military Command School ( Russian Московское высшее военное командное училище ). He then served in the Soviet Armed Forces group in Germany and then in the Belarusian military district. After serving in the 24th Separate Mechanized Brigade for seven years, he studied at the National Defense Academy and subsequently became the commander of the 300th Separate Mechanized Regiment in Chernivtsi and, in April 2005, the 72nd Separate Mechanized Brigade. From 2009 he was Chief of Staff of the 8th Army Corps and in 2011 Viktor Yanukovych promoted him from Colonel to Major General. In May 2012 he was appointed commander of the 6th Army Corps and in August 2013 he became lieutenant general. Between July and December 2014 he was the commander of the Ukrainian troops of Sector "B" in the fight against the pro-Russian forces in the Ukrainian civil war in Donbass . a. led the operation to withdraw Ukrainian troops from Ilovaisk .

Khomchak had been Chief of Staff of the Ground Forces since 2016, and from August to October 2016 he was the Commander of the Defense Forces in Eastern Ukraine. In February 2017 he became Chief Inspector of the Ministry of Defense and on May 21, 2019 Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi appointed him Chief of the General Staff and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine , succeeding Viktor Mushenko . Until mid-July 2019, he renewed the staff of the Ukrainian General Staff.
