József Ruszoly

József Ruszoly (born March 22, 1940 in Bagamér ; † September 24, 2017 in Szeged ) was a Hungarian legal historian and university professor.

Live and act

Ruszoly studied law at the University of Szeged and worked there from 1959 as a demonstrator student at the chair of legal history. After his doctorate as Dr. iur. In 1964 he became an assistant and in 1969 senior assistant. In 1977 he completed his postgraduate and was 1978 in Szeged University lecturer. In 1981 he moved to the University of Miskolc , where he co-founded the law faculty there. In 1986 Ruszoly received the degree of Doctor Scientiarum in Miskolc and was appointed university professor at the same time. In 1988 he moved back to the University of Szeged, where he held the full chair for legal history until his retirement in 2005. At the same time, he and his colleagues reorganized the law faculty of the University of Debrecen so that it was able to resume operations in 2000 after more than fifty years of inactivity. In 2006 the University of Debrecen awarded him an honorary doctorate for this service .

Ruszoly's research focus was primarily on Hungarian legal history. Here he concentrated particularly on the different electoral systems. His main work, published in 1980, deals with the Hungarian electoral jurisdiction between 1848 and 1948. He always placed the results of his research in a pan-European context and sought cross-border cooperation. Numerous research stays, particularly at German universities such as Heidelberg (three times between 1970 and 1994) or Münster (five times between 1989 and 2008), bear witness to this . Furthermore, Ruszoly researched the Hungarian and European constitutional history. A total of over 700 publications come from his pen. In 2016 he received the Iuris Consulto Excellentissimo-díj , the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences . In addition, he received the Albert Szent Györgyi Prize (1993) and the Kuno Klebelsberg Prize (2008) for his commitment to science and higher legal education.
