The Russian Church 1898

So that the Russian colony in Baden-Baden no longer had to hold its services in private rooms, Russian nobles began to collect donations for the church around 1855. In 1880, the Grand Duchess Maria Maximilianowna (born Princess Romanowski - Leuchtenberg and granddaughter of Tsar Nicholas I ) continued these efforts. The city donated a piece of land to the Russian community and had the church built in the North Russian style in 1881/82 according to the plans of the St. Petersburg architect Iwan Strom . On October 28, 1882, the three-aisled sandstone building, built on the plan of a Greek cross, was inaugurated in the presence of a large number of clerical and secular dignitaries.

The mosaic above the portal and the splendid interior are made by the Russian " painter prince " Grigor Gagarin .

Is located under the altar in a crypt of the sarcophagus of Maria Maximilianowna . In Baden-Baden she was only called "Princess Wilhelm" after her marriage to Prince Wilhelm von Baden . Another patron of the church is buried there, Princess Tatjana Gagarin .

After a long dispute over ownership of the church, it now belongs to the Russian Orthodox Church abroad , which regularly holds church services here for all believers in North Baden.
