The Russian wolf ( Canis lupus communis ) is a subspecies of the wolf ( Canis lupus ) with a controversial taxonomic status. In the Handbook of the Mammals of the World it is listed as a valid subspecies, but in other, comparable compendia , the name Canis lupus communis is listed as a younger synonym of Canis lupus lupus (Eurasian wolf), the nominated form of the wolf.

The distinction between the Russian wolf and other subspecies, especially the Eurasian wolf and the tundra wolf ( Canis lupus albus ), is based primarily on morphometric studies on the skulls of adult males. The Russian wolf is the largest Eurasian subspecies.

distribution

The Russian wolf is one of the subspecies of the wolf found in Russia . It is known to occur from the central to the subpolar Urals . Once it was probably spread over large parts of Eastern Europe and Siberia.
