from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Russian Research and Education Center “Holocaust” was founded in Moscow in 1992 and since then has been working on a more intense discussion of the Holocaust issue in Russian society. To date, it is the only non-governmental organization in the Russian Federation devoted to research into the life of Soviet Jews during the Great Patriotic War .

Area of responsibility and activity

The most important areas of responsibility of the center include historical research, holding commemorative events, incorporating the subject of the Holocaust into the curricula of secondary schools and universities, promoting opinion-forming and interviews with contemporary witnesses. In addition, the center regularly organizes exhibitions.

The main task of the center is to educate people about the genocide of the Jews during the Second World War . The specialist library is an important pillar of this work. It has been run since it was founded and has a large number of books in different languages on the subject of the Holocaust in the Soviet Union .

The most important target group in educational work are teachers. For them, projects are constantly being developed in which they can take part in courses in order to later pass on the new knowledge to their students as multipliers. The aim is to counteract anti-Semitism and create awareness of what has happened in the past. One of these projects is the international competition Teaching the Holocaust - A Path to Greater Tolerance .

The office, library, archive and course rooms are located in the center of Moscow and were renovated in 2008 thanks to support from JOINT and the Open Society Institute . In addition to the library, the center has a specialist video collection and an archive of personal items from former ghetto residents , participants in the Great Patriotic War and resistance fighters . There is also a seminar room with a regular exhibition, in which traveling exhibitions are regularly presented.

Furthermore, there are monthly meetings of the discussion group The Unknown Holocaust , the youth group and the community of the Righteous Among the Nations . In addition, leading experts from around the world regularly give lectures (including Michael Berenbaum, co-founder of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum ; Izhak Arad, former director of Yad Vashem ; Paul Levin and Stephane Bruhfeld (Sweden), authors of the book “Tell Your Children About it ”and Shimon Samuels, Director of the European Bureau of the Simon Wiesenthal Center).

Thanks to the Russian, English, Spanish and German-language traveling exhibition "The Holocaust: Annihilation, Liberation, Rescue", which was held in the parliaments of the Russian Federation, Israel, the Czech Republic and Argentina as well as the headquarters of the United Nations and UNESCO . With the help of unique material, the role of the Red Army as the liberator of several National Socialist concentration camps is brought into focus.
