Rusty Smith (basketball player)

Rusty Smith is a retired American basketball player and coach.

Life

The two-meter tall Smith played basketball at Aviation High School in Redondo Beach until 1971 , then at El Camino College in the Los Angeles area, and then from 1974 to 1976 at Montana State University in the first NCAA division. Smith played 51 games for Montana State, was 50 times in the starting line-up and averaged 13.6 points and 9.7 rebounds per encounter. He switched to the professional field and played in Germany: With the Hamburg TB he rose in 1979 from the 2nd basketball league to the basketball league  . The American was also part of the Hamburg squad in the 1979/80 season in the top division of Germany. In addition, Smith played as a professional for three years in Aschaffenburg .

In 1983 he returned to the United States and initially worked for seven years as an assistant coach for the basketball team at California State University, Northridge . At the same time, he completed his studies in sport there, followed by a degree in sport psychology. In 1990 Smith became an assistant coach at Eastern Washington University and stayed there for five years. In 1995 he took up the post of assistant coach at the University of California at Riverside , in 2001 he moved to the College of the Sequoias as head coach of the basketball team and also took on a lectureship in sports and health at the university. In March 2019, he announced his resignation as a coach. No coach of the College of the Sequoias before him had led the team to more wins, Smith celebrated 352 wins during his tenure, he lost 205 games with the team. The university team twice won the championship title in the Central Valley Conference under his leadership . 58 of his players moved from the College of the Sequoias to universities in the first NCAA division.
