Ruth Wilhelmi

Ruth Wilhelmi-König (* 1904 in Berlin ; † 1977 there ) was a German theater photographer .

Life

Wilhelmi was born the daughter of a journalist. After an apprenticeship with a Berlin photographer, Ruth Wilhelmi founded her own studio in 1926, first with a focus on portraits and fashion, then, from the early 1930s, also with theater photography. She worked mainly in Berlin, where she documented several Bert Brecht productions. Margrit Schmidt was one of her students . In 1937 she passed the master's examination and then became the in-house photographer of the State Theaters. In 1943 her studio was destroyed in an air raid. After 1945 she worked again as a theater photographer until 1972.

After her death, the German Theater Museum in Munich acquired her archive in 1981. Parts of her work can also be found in the archive of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin.

She was married to the Berlin Senator for Economic Affairs, Karl König .
