Ruthie Tompson

Ruthie Tompson (born July 22, 1910 in Portland , Maine ) is an American animator who worked for the Walt Disney Company for over 43 years .

Life

Ruthie Tompson grew up in Boston until she was eight . In 1918 she moved to Los Angeles with her family . There she attended Hollywood High School. At the age of 18 she took a job in a riding club, where she met the brothers Walt and Roy Disney . Although she had no artistic training or experience, Walt Disney hired her in 1932 as a painter for hand-drawn and colored animation in the "Ink and Paint" department of the Disney Studios, in which only women worked. The first full-length cartoon she contributed to was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs , which premiered in 1937. She later worked as a special effects supervisor . Ruthie Tompson has worked as an animator on films such as Mary Poppins , Fantasia , Dumbo and Sleeping Beauty . In 1975 she retired. In 2000 she received the Disney Legend award in the animation category.

Ruthie Tompson celebrated her 110th birthday on July 22, 2020 as the oldest member of Women in Animation .
