The rutul people ( Russian Рутульцы , self-designation мыхабыр ) are the Lesgiern ethnically related Caucasian people in the mountainous south of the Russian republic of Dagestan .

The Rutuls represent the indigenous population of the southwestern part of Dagestan and inhabit the counties ( Rajons ) Rutul and Babajurt . As of the 2010 all-Russian census , the total population of Rutulians on the territory of the Russian state was 35,240, including 27,849 in the republic of Dagestan (less than 1% of the population of this republic). In addition to Russia, there are around 40,000 rutules in northern Azerbaijan ( Sheki Rayon ).

The rutul people speak both Russian and the for lesgischen belonging language group Rutul language , which in turn five local dialects has. Most of the rutules are Sunni Muslims . Around two thirds of the rutules still live in rural areas (so-called Auls ) and are employed in agriculture .

The Rutulian people lived in the Caucasus state of Albania in the 1st millennium AD , where they formed a community ( magal ) in the 16th century . Archaeological finds in the mountains of Dagestan indicate an Islamization of the rutules that took place in the 1st millennium at the latest. In 1812 their settlement area became part of the Russian Empire . Like many other mountain peoples in the Caucasus, the Rutuls also participated in the resistance against the Russian authorities in the decades that followed.
