Ryan Townsend (born September 2, 1985 in Manchester ) is a former Australian football player .

Career

Townsend was born in 1985 in Manchester, England, the son of former professional footballer George Townsend , but spent his youth in Perth, Australia , where he played for Kingsley Olympic, Sorrento FC and ECU Joondalup . In 2002, after an offer from the English club Burnley FC , he moved to their youth academy for a three-year apprenticeship (German apprenticeship). In the 2003/04 season he made his professional debut for the Clarets when he was substituted on in an away game on March 13, 2004 at Coventry City for Dean West . Further missions in the professional team prevented, among other things, a shin injury that kept him away from the game between September 2004 and February 2005. A further commitment beyond 2005 failed because of the FIFA regulations, which provided for a training allowance of around A $ 100,000 for his three previous youth clubs in the event of a professional contract , a sum that Burnley was not willing to pay and also other English ones Prevented professional teams from signing Townsend.

After participating in the 2005 Junior World Cup in the Netherlands, where he joined the team in the last group game for Aaron Downes and scored the Australian goal in the 1-1 draw against Japan, he returned to Australia and subsequently trained with the A. League team Perth Glory . Towards the end of the season, the central defender received a short-term contract with Glory and came to two missions before he kept fit during the season break at Wanneroo City. During this period, several invitations to courses for the Australian Olympic team (U-23) were also received. For the 2006/07 season he signed a one-year contract with Perth, but was only on a short assignment until the end of December and dissolved his contract after he had previously been released for a trial period of several weeks. He impressed with the Indonesian first division club Persiba Balikpapan , for whom his compatriot Robert Gaspar also played, and spent the 2007 season in the Indonesia Super League .

In 2008 he returned to Australia and continued his career with Mandurah City in the Western Australia State League (WASL). In 2009 he finished second behind David Micevski , another former Perth Glory player, in the WASL Player of the Year election. After Townsend, who has meanwhile become team captain, had an injury-marked 2012 season, he has not been part of the squad since 2013.
