Ryania speciosa var. Mutisii is a variety of Ryania speciosa , a widespread species from the willow family(Salicaceae) that occurs in several varieties in South America. Since there has been no evidence since the beginning of the 19th century, it isconsidered extinctaccording to the current information from the IUCN . It is named after the Spanish botanist José Mutis (1732–1808) who discovered this plant in 1783.

features

Ryania speciosa var. Mutisii was a shrub or small tree of unknown height. The branches were covered with rust-colored, somewhat upright felt hair. As with the variety Ryania speciosa var. Chocoensis , which occurs in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, the leaves were oblong or largely wide. The tip of the shoot was pointed briefly, the leaf base was somewhat blunt. The leaves were shiny and finely hairy along the midrib. Between the ribs on the top they were covered with scattered, straight, simple hairs. The underside was covered with soft felt hair, whereby the star hairs were long and erect, sometimes only with two to three rays or reduced to simple hair.

status

Ryania speciosa var. Mutisii is known only from the collections of the Spanish botanist Mutis, which were brought together between 1783 and 1808 in a not exactly known area in the provinces of Tolima and / or Cundinamarca in Colombia. No further specimens have been discovered since then. The holotype is in the United States National Herbarium, the material marked as isotypes is in the herbaria of the Field Museum of Natural History , the Conservatoire et Jardin botaniques de la Ville de Genève , the Royal Botanic Gardens (Kew) , the Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid and in the Nordiska Herbariet in Stockholm. In 1998 Ryania speciosa var. Mutisii was added to the IUCN's list of extinct plant taxa. The exact cause of the disappearance of this taxon is unknown.
