São Francisco (Portuguese: Igreja São Francisco ; German: Church of St. Francis ) is a church in the old town of Porto in Portugal, which is a World Heritage Site .

description

The construction of the church, which originally belonged to the local Franciscan monastery , began in 1383 and was completed in 1425. It was mainly built in the Gothic style and largely redesigned in the Baroque style in the 17th and 18th centuries . The church was equipped with one of the most lavish decorations in gilded carving ever created, and is thus an absolute and lavish highlight of the typical Portuguese Talha dourada from the 17th and 18th centuries (see gallery below). The work dragged on over many decades, and covered different styles, from the Talha in the so-called Estilo nacional (national style) of the high baroque in the 17th century, to the late baroque style under Dom João V to the Rococo.

The individual carvings come from:

  • Main chapel choir : António Gomes (1683), Domingos Nunes (1683-84), Tribune and throne of Filipe da Silva (1687)
  • Frames and two panels: Filipe da Silva (1689–90)
  • Altar of Santa Isabella of Hungary : João da Costa (1690–91)
  • Chapel of the Nossa Senhora da Conceição : António Gomes (1717)
  • Altar of Santa Rosa de Viterbo : António Gomes (1718)
  • Altar of the Jesse Root : António Gomes and Filipe da Silva (1718)
  • Chapel of Saint Anthony : Luís Pereira da Costa (1724)
  • Altar of the Nossa Senhora da Rosa (or Rosary Madonna of the Slaves): Manuel da Costa Andrade (1740)
  • Altar Nossa Senhora da Graça : Manuel da Costa Andrade (1743)
  • Various carvings (strips, doors) and an altar: José Teixeira Guimarães (1746–49)
  • Altar of the Nossa Senhora da Encarnação ( Anunciação da Nossa Senhora): Manuel Pereira da Costa Noronha (1750)
  • Altar Nossa Senhora da Conceição ( Santos Mártires de Maroccos ): Manuel Pereira da Costa Noronha (1750)
  • Altar of the chapel of the Nossa Senhora da Soledade : Francisco Pereira Campanhã (1764)

The important Talha dourada artist Miguel Francisco da Silva, for whom no work is documented in the church, was buried in the church in 1750.

The monastery belonging to the church was destroyed in 1833 during the War of the Miguelists . The Stock Exchange Palace ( Palácio da Bolsa ) was built on the monastery grounds in 1834 .

Today the church is only used for cultural, but no longer for religious purposes. It is open for viewing.
