São José is a city in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina . It is on the Atlantic coast and belongs to the agglomeration (Área Metropolitânea) Greater Florianópolis ( Portuguese Grande Florianópolis ).

The settlement was founded in 1750 by 180 married couples from the Azores islands of São Miguel and São Jorge . On August 1, 1833, it was raised to a city ( Portuguese município ).

In 1845 the city already had 21,000 inhabitants. It owes its current size to its proximity to the state capital Florianópolis, to which it is directly adjacent. Today, with around 200,000 inhabitants, São José is the second largest city in the agglomeration after the capital itself and employs around 50,000 people. Due to its function as an industrial city, it suffers from severe environmental pollution. Among other things, this has led to the fact that the sea in the area of the city can no longer be used for swimming.

The city is connected to the regional road network through the BR 101, a main road in Brazil over 4,500 kilometers long, and the SC 407 state road.

Pedra Branca mountain (height 460 meters) offers views of the sea and the city. The city's beaches are - also because of the local fish restaurants and beach bars - a popular destination despite the increasing pollution.
