São Nicolau is a former municipality ( freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Mesão Frio in northern Portugal . The community had 482 inhabitants on an area of 0.45 km² (as of June 30, 2011).
The municipality was one of the two municipalities of the small town ( Vila ) Mesão Frio (Santa Cristina was the second). Sights such as the Romanesque tombs ( Arcas tumulares românicas ), the eponymous parish church Igreja de São Nicolau and the historic Hospital da Misericórdia are located here.
In the course of the territorial reform of September 29, 2013 , the municipalities of São Nicolau, Vila Jusã and Santa Cristina were merged to form the new municipality of Mesão Frio (Santo André) . São Nicolau is the seat of this newly formed community.
