The sawmill Meier-Osthoff is the youngest of the five water mills in Harsewinkel , North Rhine-Westphalia , and is now used as a museum. It was built in the last quarter of the 19th century and was shut down in the late 1980s. After the establishment of a support association and the repair of the technical equipment, it has been functional again since 2012. The building and the technical equipment have been under monument protection since 2004. There were only four comparable systems in North Rhine-Westphalia.

architecture

The listed single-storey complex consists of several parts. The building ensemble is mostly made of timber framing. The main house with a saddle roof is traufständig to Abrocksbach , the horizontal turbine drives with cast blades. The turbine house is a brick building with a gable roof. The eccentric drive is located in a half-timbered extension with a further extension for the auxiliary drive.

From the technical equipment, accumulators with a sandstone frame have been preserved, as well as the power distribution with the associated switchboard. The core equipment includes the saw frame with frame carriage, the associated eccentric drive and the necessary tracks and carts. Also present is the Francis shaft turbine with standing shaft from the beginning of the 20th century.

functionality

An eccentric drive drives the horizontal saw frame

With the help of the horizontal turbine driven by the Abrocksbach, the eccentric drive drives the also horizontal saw frame. The log to be sawed lies on a gate carriage and is advanced towards the gate. The power transmission from the turbine to the eccentric or to the propulsion of the gate carriage takes place via transmission .

history

A dam in the Abrocksbach in Harsewinkel was proven as early as 1820. In 1877 the farmer Joseph Meier Osthoff first installed a turbine system, which was probably designed by one of his sons. Since the Abrocksbach threatened to silt up with Mayor Diepenbrock after the lawsuit by Strullkötter, known as Kröger, on June 13, 1877, the request came on August 6, 1877 to remove the turbine. In 1882 Meier Osthoff submitted the official application for a turbine. Use for a sawmill was already formulated in the application. On February 9, 1884, the Münster district government approved the operation. Two years later, Meier Osthoff was able to start the sideline operation of the sawmill with a horizontal saw frame.

After 20 years of use, the first turbine had become unusable. It was replaced by a new Francis turbine that was purchased in Osnabrück. From at least 1907 it also served to power the farm; the sawmill remained the main task. Until the 1960s, the sawmill was operated regularly, especially for construction timber. After that it was only put into operation by order. At the end of the 1980s, operations were finally shut down.

On March 22, 2004, the building and equipment were entered under the number 61 in the list of monuments of the city of Harsewinkel. In 2006, during a demonstration, the drive belt tore and the entire system came to a standstill. As of October 2008, advice was given on the maintenance and operation of the mill via a support association, which was founded on April 23, 2009. With the financial resources of private sponsors, the local economy and a grant from the NRW Foundation in the amount of 50,000 euros, the building was secured and the turbine and the saw frame were repaired. The saw has been functional since May 2012 and is presented to interested visitors every month.
