Distribution of the sawbill shadow hummingbird

The total length of the male is about 15 cm, that of the female about 14 cm. The weight is around 11 g, the length of the strong and slightly curved beak around 3.5 cm. While the upper beak is black, the lower beak is yellowish with a black tip. The species shows a sexual dimorphism .

The male is dark olive-brown on the upper side and a cream-colored stripe runs from the eye to the neck. The throat is light russet and has a black-dashed longitudinal stripe in the middle, while the chest and belly are dashed black and white. The black tail with a purple sheen is rounded. The outer three pairs of control springs have cream-colored tips that become larger towards the outside.

The female is smaller than the male. The beak shows a slightly more pronounced curve. The throat strip is only indicated.

Systematics

Today it is the only species within the genus Ramphodon , which used to include the bronze-tailed shadow hummingbird . Although it is classified into the subfamily Phaethornithinae (shadow hummingbirds or hermits), it shows similarities with the real hummingbirds (subfamily Trochilinae). A number of autapomorphies, such as the unusual beak, suggest that it is one of the most primitive species within the shadow hummingbird lineage.

Etymology and history of research

Charles Dumont de Sainte Croix described the hummingbird under the name Trochilus nævius . He gave the mountain Corcovado in Brazil as the site. It was not until 1830 with his fourth delivery of Traité d'ornithologie that the species was assigned to the new genus Ramphodon by René Primevère Lesson . This word comes from the Greek word "rhamphos ῥαμφος " for "beak" and "odous, odōn οδους, οδων " for "tooth". »Naevius« is the Latin word for »spotted, spotted, spotted«.
