The Sæløer (German: Seal Islands ) is a sailing ship sailing under the German flag .

history

The ship was built in Norway in 1917 according to plans by Colin Archer, the designer who gave the ship its name , and was launched under the name Sæløer , named after the seal islands, an archipelago in southern Norway.

In the early 1980s, the ship was faithfully restored by several Danish shipyards according to original plans from the Norsk Maritimt Museum (Norwegian Maritime Museum) . Since then, the ship has been sailing again as a privately owned sailing ship. Home port is the museum harbor in Kappeln an der Schlei.

The Sæløer made the longest voyage so far in 1997 to the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic .

Ship and rigging

The ship has an unusual width of 6.75 meters, which ensures relatively "upright sailing" (little heeling even in strong winds). The ship has modern navigation technology (GPS chart plotter, electronic sea charts, fish finder , radar, GMDSS ).
