The sérsveit ríkislögreglustjóra (German: "Special Command of the National Police"), also known colloquially as Víkingasveitin (German: "Viking Command "), is an Icelandic special unit .

Víkingasveitin means something like " Viking command". The name goes back to the ancestors of the Icelandic people. The unit was founded in 1982 and was initially subordinate to the police chief of Reykjavík . In 2004, the supreme command of the "Vikings" was transferred to the National Police Commander by law. The Icelandic special unit is largely based on the British Special Air Service as well as the German GSG 9 .

The current Víkingasveitin is a special unit that was also trained for missions abroad. Some members have already been active in the Balkans within the framework of NATO , some are currently in Afghanistan . The unit with around 30-50 men is made up of specially trained members of the police who have been trained by the Norwegian army . The standard weapon is traditionally used also by the Norwegian army assault rifle HK G3 or HK G36 or the submachine gun HK MP5 from German arms manufacturer Heckler & Koch , the sniper rifle Blaser R93 Tactical and the pistol Glock 17 . The unit serves the fight against terrorism , national security and is also responsible for the security of state guests. If necessary, the police will assist them .

Víkingasveitin is stationed at the country's largest airport, Keflavík Airport. The unit is specialized in different tasks and divided at present into five trains :

  • Train to use and defuse explosives
  • Boat pull for use on and under the water
  • Sniper platoon for the targeted elimination of enemies and for reconnaissance
  • Train to the intelligence service
  • Paratrooper train to secure ports, surprise attacks and rescue hostages from airplanes.
