The Sørhortane ( Norwegian for south rock ) are rocky outcrops in Queen Maud's East Antarctic Land . In the Wohlthatmassiv they rise along the northeastern edge of the Horteriset south of the Petermann range .
The first aerial photographs were taken during the German Antarctic Expedition in 1938/39 under the direction of polar explorer Alfred Ritscher . Norwegian cartographers, who also named them, mapped them on the basis of surveys and aerial photographs of the Third Norwegian Antarctic Expedition (1956–1960).
