Sørkapp-Land is the name of the southernmost peninsula of Spitsbergen , the largest island in Svalbard . The name comes from the eponymous Sørkapp ( Norwegian for southern cape), the cape on the extreme southern tip of Spitsbergen - although Sørkapp itself is located on the offshore island of Sørkappøya.
The uninhabited land is bordered in the north by the Hornsund , an approx. 25 km long incision in the west coast of Svalbard. On the east coast lies the Hambergbukta bay, which extends around 5 kilometers into the country . The 15 km wide connection of the peninsula in the north is marked by the Hornbreen and Hambergbreen glaciers . North of the sound is Wedel-Jarlsberg-Land , north of the two Torell-Land glaciers . The closest human settlement is the Polish station opposite on Hornsund, with a permanent crew of 10 researchers.
The Sørkapp marks the border between the Barents Sea in the east and south-east, the European North Sea in the south-west and the Greenland Sea in the north-west.
The peninsula belongs entirely to the Sør Spitsbergen National Park (1 on the map) and forms about its southern third. The larger northern part of the national park is occupied by the Wedel-Jarlsberg-Land and the Torrell-Land.
