The Southern Army ( Japanese 南方 軍 , Nampō-gun ) was a main army ( army group ) of the Imperial Japanese Army during the Pacific War in World War II . Your Tsūshōgō code (military cover name) was Authority ( , i ) or i1160 , sometimes NA .

Data

The Southern Army was set up on November 6, 1941 as part of the Imperial Army and was subordinate to the Daihon'ei . Initially, it consisted of several subordinate units, including some regional armies , such as the 14th Regional Army (Gen. Yamashita Tomoyuki ) and the 18th Regional Army (Gen. Nakamura Aketo ), and several armies , such as the 18th Army (Gen. Adachi Hatazō ) and the 15th Army (Gen. Iida Shōjirō ). The Southern Army was under the command of Field Marshal Terauchi Hisaichi and its central headquarters was in Saigon . Their task was to capture and defend Burma , Thailand , Indochina , Borneo , the Philippines , New Guinea , the Solomon Islands and other smaller island bases in the Pacific during the Japanese invasion of Southeast Asia in 1942 . Almost all units in this army were wiped out in the fighting from 1943 to 1945 by Allied forces in Burma, New Guinea, the Philippines and the Pacific. The army was disbanded on August 31, 1945 after the surrender of Japan.
