The Southern Federal University (abbreviation SFedU, Russian Южный Федеральный Университет ) is a university founded in 2006 in southern Russia .

history

The university was re-established on November 23, 2006 with the incorporation of the Taganrog State Radio Technical University , the Rostov State Pedagogical University and the Rostov State Academy of Architecture and Art into the Rostov State University . The Botanical Garden of the Southern Federal University belongs to the university .

The university is the largest scientific and educational center in southern Russia and is represented in the cities of Rostov-on-Don and Taganrog.

The university has its origins in 1915 when the Imperial Warsaw University was founded by Tsar Alexander I in 1817 . had opened, was relocated to Rostov-on-Don.

The initiator of the relocation of the Warsaw University in Rostov-on-Don was Nikolai Vasilyevich Parijski . The university was renamed several times during the 20th century.

As part of the national “Education” project, the following institutions were merged as the Southern Federal University on the basis of a decree of the Government of the Russian Federation of November 23, 2006 and one of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation of December 4, 2006: The Rostov State University University, the Taganrog State University of Radio Technology, the Rostov State Pedagogical University and the Rostov State Academy of Architecture and Art.

The university is located in two cities in the Rostov region: in Rostov-on-Don, where all the central administrative bodies of the university and two branch institutes are located, and in Taganrog, where there is an engineering academy. The student infrastructure includes the student cafes and canteen, 19 student residences in Rostov and Taganrog, 22 sports departments and the “South Meridian” sports complex with a 50-meter swimming pool.

General information

In addition to the 37 faculties and 16 research institutes and design offices, there are 206 chairs, 15 education and science centers and 50 small businesses at the university.

In 2016, the university included 5 academies, 12 educational institutions, 6 faculties, 6 branches and 2 representative offices, as well as 19 innovative-technological and scientific centers, 3 research institutes, a museum and the regional scientific center Russian Academy of Education. In 2018, more than 27,987 students were studying at the university.

The Southern Federal University has been on the list of TOP 100 universities in the BRICS countries since 2013. In 2014, the “Expert RA” agency awarded the university a “C” rating, which means “high level” of preparation for university graduates. In 2016, the Southern Federal University took 85th place in the ranking of the best universities in the BRICS countries.

International cooperation

The university works with numerous partners from 53 countries, e.g. B. with Erasmus partner universities as well as within the framework of joint programs with foreign universities (program of double degrees) and joint publications with foreign researchers. In addition, 62 lecturers and researchers from abroad work at the university.
