The southern cylinder nappy snail ( Truncatellina callicratis ) is a species of the nappy snail family (Vertiginidae) from the suborder of land snails (Stylommatophora).

features

The cylindrical shell of the southern cylinder diaper snail is 1.6 to 2.2 mm high and 0.7 to 0.9 mm wide. The coils are moderately arched and separated from each other by a deep seam. The surface is provided with weak, irregular ribs. In some examples, the housing can also be approximately smooth. deeper. The mouth is egg-shaped, slightly higher than it is wide. The mouth space is weakly reinforced and only slightly bent, especially at the basal and spindle edge. The typical shape has three teeth deep in the mouth, a parietal, columellar and palatal tooth. The palatal tooth is usually clearly visible in the frontal view. In some populations, the teeth can also be more or less reduced, or completely absent. In such cases the shell can hardly be distinguished from the cylindrical diaper snail ( Truncatellina cylindrica ).

Similar species

The shell is very similar to the shell of the beaded cylinder diaper snail ( Truncatellina costulata ) and the cylinder diaper snail ( Truncatellina cylindrica ). The casing of the cylindrical worm is very slightly conical. The mouth seam of the beaded cylinder diaper snail is wider. The cylinder diaper snail has no teeth protruding into the mouth. However, the southern cylindrical snail also has populations with poorly developed or even missing teeth. Such specimens are difficult to distinguish from one another.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species occurs very dispersed from Spain in the west to the Caucasus, Central Asia and Pakistan. In the south the area extends to Algeria, in the north to southern Germany and southern England. In Switzerland, the species rises up to 2200 m above sea level. In England it occurs mainly on the coasts.

The species lives on very dry limestone grasslands on open, rocky slopes. The species is also found on cliffs and in old quarries in southern England.
