( Nilsson , 1823)

The beaded cylinder diaper snail ( Truncatellina costulata ) is a type of snail of the family of diaper snails (Vertiginidae) from the suborder of land snails (Stylommatophora).

features

The cylindrical housing of the beaded cylinder diaper snail is 1.7 to 2 mm high and 0.9 mm wide (1.6-1.95 × 0.5-0.6 mm: Welter-Schultes ). It has 5½ to 6½ rounded turns, which are separated from each other by a deep seam. The last passage is slightly flattened on the outer edge, so the last passage is slightly shouldered. The mouth is pointed ovoid, laterally and slightly flattened at the top. Overall, the mouth is a little wider than it is high when viewed from the front. The wide edge of the mouth is thickly lipped and colored white. A parietal tooth and a columellar tooth are clearly visible. The palatal tooth is only inserted deep into the mouth and is therefore only visible when looking at the mouth perpendicularly.

The case is light yellow-brown to reddish-brown, the surface is decorated with very regular, coarse and sharp ribs. The spaces between the ribs are as wide as the ribs themselves.

The genital apparatus is very simply built. In the male tract, the spermatic duct (vas deferens) branches off from the egg duct early. It is short, slightly twisted and penetrates the penis apically. The retractor muscle starts at the junction between the spermatic duct and the penis. The penis is moderately long and thick in the middle. In the female tract, the free fallopian tube (oviduct) is about as long as the vagina, which is slightly thickened in the middle. The stem of the spermathec is short and thin, the bladder small and elongated-ovoid.

Similar species

The shell of the beaded cylinder diaper snail is similar to the shell of the cylinder diaper snail ( Truncatellina cylindrica ) and the southern cylinder diaper snail ( Truncatellina callicratis ). The shell of the southern cylinder nappy snail is significantly slimmer, that of the cylinder nappy snail has a broader last handle. Both types also differ in the denser and less pronounced ribs. The mouth of the beaded cylinder worm is wider than it is high. The edge of the mouth is noticeably wide, thickened with lips and colored white.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The range of the species extends over Central and Eastern Europe (up to the Ulyanovsk region , Russia and the Ukraine). However, the occurrences are very dispersed. In the north it extends to Denmark and southern Sweden ( Scania , Öland , Gotland ), in the southeast to Bulgaria, Romania and the Caucasus.

The species prefers dry habitats, such as grasslands, sand dunes, light forests and road embankments.

Taxonomy

The taxon was first described by Nilsson in 1823 as Pupa costulata . The Fauna Europaea does not list synonyms . BioLib, however, lists Pupa ascaniensis Schmidt, 1849 as a synonym.

Danger

The species is endangered in Germany.
