distribution

Distribution area of the southern white-breasted hedgehog (red)

These animals are distributed in western Asia and the southern Caucasus and are native to Armenia , Azerbaijan , Georgia , Iran , Israel , Russia , Syria and Turkey .

description

It differs from the brown-breasted hedgehog , as the name suggests, above all by its chest which is white from about the middle and clearly contrasted with the brown or brown-gray surroundings. Sometimes there are also animals with a completely white underside. The chest mark can get bigger with age. The head body length of 22 to 30 centimeters and the average weight of 1000 grams correspond to the brown-breasted hedgehog and the northern white-breasted hedgehog . The top of the head and the back are provided with spikes, in the event of an attack the animal can curl up into a ball.

Way of life

Not much is known about the way of life of the southern white-breasted hedgehog, but it is believed that in most cases it corresponds to that of the northern white-breasted hedgehog ( Erinaceus roumanicus ). They are nocturnal loners who spend the day in a nest to look for food at night. Their diet consists mainly of insects, earthworms and millipedes.

Systematics

Originally the white-breasted hedgehog was assigned to the brown-breasted hedgehog. Later investigations showed that the northern and southern white-breasted hedgehogs are not identical.

As of 2005, the following subspecies of the southern white-breasted hedgehog have been described:

  • Erinaceus concolor concolor Martin , 1837
  • Erinaceus concolor rhodius Festa , 1914
  • Erinaceus concolor transcaucasicus Satunin , 1905
