The southern Palawan squirrel ( Sundasciurus steerii ) is a species of squirrel from the genus of the Sunda tree squirrel ( Sundasciurus ). It lives in the south of the island of Palawan, which belongs to the Philippines .

features

The southern Palawan squirrel reaches a head-trunk length of about 19.8 to 20.6 centimeters with a weight of 160 to 260 grams. The tail is 15.5 to 16.2 centimeters long, making it slightly shorter than the rest of the body. The back color of the animals is generally reddish chestnut brown to light brown and more reddish compared to the Northern Palawan squirrel ( Sundasciurus juvencus ). The ventral side is chestnut to cloudy brown.

distribution

The southern Palawan squirrel lives endemically in the south of the island of Palawan, which belongs to the Philippines, as well as on the neighboring islands of Balabac , Bancalan and Matangule .

Way of life

No data are available on the way of life of the southern Palawan squirrel. It originally lives in the primary forest , but can also live in the secondary forest . In addition, it occurs in banana and coconut plantations as well as agricultural areas and is sometimes viewed as a pest.

Systematics

The southern Palawan squirrel is classified as an independent species within the genus of the Sunda tree squirrel ( Sundasciurus ), which - depending on the author - consists of 15 to 17 species. The first scientific description comes from Albert Günther from 1877, who described the species using individuals from the island of Balabac .

Apart from the nominate form, no further subspecies are distinguished within the species .

Status, threat and protection

The southern Palawan squirrel is classified as Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). This classification is justified with the relatively frequent occurrence on the island and its adaptability to habitat changes. There are no potential threats to the company's existence.
