There are a number of cities that claim to be the southernmost city in the world . These include in particular Ushuaia in Argentina as well as Puerto Williams and Punta Arenas in Chile .

Which city is the southernmost in the world is controversial, as there is no consensus on the size of a place from which it can be described as a city. So one can declare Punta Arenas ( latitude 53 ° 9 'S) with more than 100,000 inhabitants to be the southernmost city in the world with little doubt. Ushuaia (54 ° 48 'S) is located to the south, but with only about 60,000 inhabitants (2005 ). Puerto Williams (54 ° 57 'S), on the other hand, on the Chilean island of Navarino has only 2,700 inhabitants and can therefore be considered the southernmost place in the world. Even further south is Puerto Toro (55 ° 04 '59 "S) in the east of Navarino. 50 fishermen live with their families in Puerto Toro. The Chilean Antarctic base Villa Las Estrellas (62 ° 13' S) is also permanently occupied by a civilian population ( around 88 people), as well as the Argentine Esperanza station (63 ° 23 ′ S).

The American Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station , which is inhabited all year round, is located directly at the pole .

The southernmost metropolis in the world is Melbourne (37 ° 48 'S) in Australia . The southernmost capital is Wellington , New Zealand (41 ° 17 'S).
