South rail
In German politics, the term Südschiene denotes the cooperation between the southern federal states of Germany, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg , which for a long time were ruled by CDU or CSU governments.
In the Spiegel the term was used for the first time in 1959 in connection with a "Südschiene" advertising program for broadcasters. In 1978, Spiegel also spoke of a “conservative southern line” of Helmut Kohl's opponents in the CDU and CSU.
After the change of power in Baden-Wuerttemberg in 2011 to a Green - SPD government, according to media reports, the southern line was terminated by the Bavarian Prime Minister Horst Seehofer , which even outraged the Baden-Wuerttemberg CDU. In 2014 there was another joint push into the energy policy of the two countries. There was also a joint advance in financial policy in September 2014.
At the end of July 2019, the southern rail was revived under the Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Baden-Württemberg) and Markus Söder (Bavaria) by a joint cabinet meeting in Meersburg , Baden-Württemberg . In the cabinet meeting, among other things, extensive cooperation in the areas of battery research, climate protection, energy policy and joint, cross-border transport projects was promised.
