The locomotive with the series designation Я (German transcription Ja) was a Garratt locomotive of the Soviet Railways (SŽD).

history

The individual steam locomotive of the class Я was the heaviest and largest ever Garratt locomotive and also the only one for the Russian broad gauge (1524 mm). The locomotive was delivered in 1932 by Beyer-Peacock with the serial number 6737. The locomotive was assembled in the Proletarski repair shop . Thereafter, tests took place in February and March 1933 on the route from Yekaterinburg to Chelyabinsk . In the second half of the year, driving and thermal tests were carried out at the Scientific Research Institute for Railways.

No other Garratt has ever operated under conditions similar to those found in Russia . Because of the temperatures, which could drop below −40 ° C, all steam lines of the vehicle were fitted with drainage valves so that they could not freeze up when the locomotive was switched off. The tests showed that the indicated performance and the specific steam consumption did not meet expectations.

The Я-01 was apparently not a great success because it is said to have been dismantled as early as 1937. It was officially deleted from the East Siberian Railway in 1957. Political reasons probably also played a role; they didn't want to be dependent on foreign licenses and imports. Since the Soviet counter-design, a locomotive with a 2'G'2 ( AA20 ) wheel arrangement , was a complete failure, the weights of the trains were limited to such an extent that they could be handled by 1'E1 'locomotives.

The role of the greatest successful Garratt therefore fell to Class 59 of the East African Railways , which, despite its design for meter gauge, has the same boiler diameter as the Я-01 and whose friction weight is even slightly higher.

technical features

Type sketch

The locomotive with the wheel arrangement (2'D1 ') (1'D2') was designed for an axle load of 20 t and the transport of 2500 t heavy trains and developed a tractive force of 35,700 kg. The boiler with a grate area of 7.94 m² was fired with coal via a mechanical stoker .
