The locomotives of the class ТУ4 (German transcription TU4) of the Soviet Railways (SŽD) are narrow-gauge diesel locomotives .

development

The ТУ4 series was developed as the successor to the ТУ2М / ТУ2МК series built from 1959 to 1962 for use on lighter superstructures. In 1960 two prototypes were built under the series designation ТУ ГМ 4. The driver's cab was already at the end of the locomotive body. In 1961, the series production of the ТУ4 series began at the Kambarka machine factory (Камбарский машиностроительный завод).

The ТУ4 is designed as a four-axle bogie diesel locomotive with hydromechanical power transmission. Due to its axle load of only 4.25 tons, it is particularly suitable for use on peat tracks.

More than 3210 TU4s had been built by 1972. Various modifications were made. From ТУ4-1300 the window division in the side wall of the driver's cab was adapted to the more powerful series ТУ5 built from 1964 (two narrow windows instead of one wide). The position of the headlights has also been changed.

Due to the - apart from a few exceptions - uniform gauge of 750 mm for the narrow-gauge railways of the Soviet Union, the ТУ4 were built almost exclusively for this gauge. Only a few ТУ4s were built for the 1067 mm gauge. The ТУ4 was not exported.

commitment

The design for less resilient superstructure necessitated the use primarily for peat, forest and industrial railways. Only a few U4s got to the railways subordinate to the Ministry of Transport ( Ministerstvo putej soobschtschenija , MPS).

As the successor to the ТУ4, the series ТУ6А was available from 1972 , which later also displaced part of the ТУ4 from its areas of application. Only a few TU4s were used on children's railways . The whereabouts of most of the TU4s is unclear; when in use in 2007, only about 60 were detectable.

Modifications

Due to the decentralized maintenance, some modifications were made to the operational railways. The ТУ4 of Karinskaya Uskokolejnaja Schelesnaja Doroga in Karintorf received automatic couplings.
