To date, only the city of Paris and the surrounding area in France has a transport system comparable to that of the German S-Bahn . This article summarizes approaches and plans in other cities and regions.

Paris

In Paris and the surrounding Île de France there is an extensive S-Bahn network called Réseau express régional d'Île-de-France , or RER for short .

Toulouse

In Toulouse , the drive trains of the SNCF with such a small distance between stops in the city that this line C as part of the Métro de Toulouse is considered. The line has six stations over a length of seven kilometers, i.e. a station distance of approx. 1.4 km, comparable to the RER and S-Bahn . There is also an improvement in regional transport services on other lines.

Lille

The RER Lille - Bassin Minier is due to go into operation in 2020 after several delays. In the city of Lille and the neighboring suburbs, a new trunk line is being built in a north-south direction. Several lines will then run over this main route, which will use existing SNCF routes on their outer branches and, in addition, will also connect neighboring Belgium in the future.

Lyon

In Lyon , politicians are beginning to speak of RER-like transport services under the name REAL ; this can be seen in very small steps:

  • A regional line - possibly as a tram-train - from Villefranche to Givors has already been diametrically opposed, which means that instead of a terminal station in Lyon, it now runs through and thus allows a (still very limited) direct connection from northern and southern suburbs . Various new stops are under discussion.
  • Three former disused railway lines in the West have been revived and will in future with Tram Train - vehicles be driven. These lines end in Lyon at the suburban train station Gare de St. Paul ; Many people want an extension as a tram train through the city center .
  • An old railway line has also been reactivated in the east and will be used by trams from 2006 . The distance between the stops is 1.3 km, so this tram has a higher travel speed than the Métro and is thus similar to an S-Bahn. From 2007, a tram-train will also run to the airport on the same line. The above-mentioned extension of the western lines through the city center would logically lead to Part Dieu station , where it can be connected to the eastern lines. None of this is planned for the current construction work. In addition, the eastern tram is under the responsibility of the agglomeration and the city, the airport tram train under the responsibility of the department and the western tram train under the responsibility of the region . Political complications are foreseeable.

Geneva

The Léman Express (formerly RER Genève), a S-Bahn system for the Swiss city of Geneva and its surroundings, also includes line branches in France.
