The Syndicat interdépartemental pour l'assainissement de l'agglomération parisienne (SIAAP) is the wastewater association for the greater Paris area .

The SIAAP treats more than 2.5 million cubic meters of wastewater per day in five sewage treatment plants . The wastewater comes from around 8.5 million people who live and work in the 2000 square kilometer catchment area. The treated wastewater is fed to the Seine .

The SIAAP was founded in 1970 by the departments of Paris , Hauts-de-Seine , Seine-Saint-Denis and Val-de-Marne . In the following years, 180 additional municipalities from the departments of Val-d'Oise , Essonne , Yvelines and Seine-et-Marne joined.

SIAAP is managed by the President Maurice Ouzoulias and the General Director Daniel Duminy. Political control is exercised by the board of directors, which is made up of representatives from the affiliated local authorities. The SIAAP employs a total of around 1700 people.

With an annual turnover of almost one billion euros, SIAAP is the largest French client in the environmental sector. The investments mainly concern the modernization and enlargement of the sewage treatment plants, the maintenance of the transport systems and the construction of rainwater retention basins. Due to stricter EU wastewater standards, the costs for the wastewater treatment plants have increased significantly in the last ten years. Most of the funding comes from the water bill and only to a small extent from government grants.
