History and description
The SIEGE block was built in 1926 according to plans by the architects Hans Kleinschmidt and Hermann Schieker . The apartment block is between Rheinstrasse and the main train station . The three-wing residential complex belongs to the style of brick expressionism and is a particularly characteristic, well-preserved example of this architectural style .
The architectural details include:
- The triangular balconies and bay windows protruding from the facade .
- The decorative details made of brickwork in the area of the entrance, roof end and arches.
- The enclosure made of bricks with a square metal handrail and balls.
- The horizontal stairwell glazing .
- The expressionistically geometrically designed water inlets on the rain gutter .
- The brick ornaments on the gate passages.
- The two expressionist lamps at the gateways were reconstructed in 1990 based on historical models.
Monument protection
The residential complex survived the Second World War largely unscathed.
