SML Isuzu Limited is a commercial vehicle manufacturer and dealer based in Chandigarh, India . It is a joint venture between Sumitomo (43.96%), Isuzu (15.0%) and other shareholders (41.04%). The listed company was called Swaraj Mazda Limited from 1984 to 2011 .

history

The company was founded in 1983 as Swaraj Vehicles Limited . A year later, a joint venture and a technical cooperation agreement between Punjab Tractor Limited (29%), Mazda (15.6%) and Sumitomo (10.4%) were agreed. At the same time the company was renamed Swaraj Mazda Limited . Production, which began in 1986, was supplemented by a self-developed bus in 1987 and by its own truck (Swaraj Mazda Super) in 1990.

Swaraj Mazda's market share in light commercial vehicles was 4.42% in the first year, 4.67% in 1988 and 6.31% in 1990 (or 2.6% of the commercial vehicle market). From 1991 to 1995 it was again 4 percent. In the first 20 years Swaraj Mazda produced a total of 100,000 vehicles. At the same time, a technical cooperation agreement was concluded with Isuzu.

In early 2009, Sumitomo took over the entire stake in Swaraj Mazda from Punjab Tractors Limited. Subsequently, Mahindra & Mahindra, as majority owners of PTL (which sells its tractors under the brand name Swaraj ), demanded the use of the brand name Swaraj Mazda to cease. This became obsolete when Swaraj Mazda was renamed SML Isuzu Limited in 2011.

in 2014, SML Isuzu had a 7.5% market share in light commercial vehicles.

In the 2017 financial year, 12,700 vehicles (7,919 buses and 6,990 trucks) were produced, compared with 14,909 units (6,814 buses and 5,886 trucks) in 2017. The theoretical production capacity is 18,000 units.

SML Isuzu exports vehicles to Nepal , Bhutan , Sri Lanka (buses), Ghana , Tanzania and CKD kits to Bangladesh .

Isuzu also has a 12.4% stake in Isuzu Motors India in India .

Models

The buses exported include models with 14 to 45 seats. The trucks produced (or their kits) have a payload of 3 to 12 tons.
