The sodium-dependent multivitamin transporter (SMVT) ( gene : SLC5A6 ) is the protein in the cell membrane of animal cells that facilitates the introduction of pantothenate , biotin and lipoate . So it is a transport protein . In humans, SMVT occurs in all tissue types, so it is probably also responsible for the absorption of vitamins via the small intestine .
The transport equation is:
- Solute (outside) + Na + (outside) Solute (inside) + Na + (inside)
It is a symport with the possible solutes pantothenate , biotin and lipoate . Since SVMT also occurs in the blood-brain barrier , it is a possible target for the pharmaceutical industry to optimize the absorption of drugs in the body.
The regulation of the expression of SVMT carried out at oversupply of biotin by chromatin -Remodeling at the locus of the SLC5A6 - promoter by the Holocarboxysynthetase .
