history

It all began in a bookbinding business that was founded by Gustav Emil Stabernack in Offenbach am Main in 1879 . At the beginning of the 20th century the company started the industrial production of cardboard packaging and was converted into a GmbH in 1917 under the name Gustav Stabernack GmbH . As early as 1920 the first branch was built in Pfungstadt , but closed again after a few years due to the poor economic conditions.

In 1926 Gustav Emil Stabernack handed over management of the company to his sons Georg and Richard Stabernack. In addition to fine cardboard boxes, the company also produced shoe boxes for the Offenbach-based leather goods industry. From 1940 a steam-powered laminating machine was developed for the production of corrugated cardboard. During the Second World War, the main plant in Offenbach was completely destroyed in a heavy air raid in 1944. With machines rescued from the rubble, production was provisionally resumed before the end of the war under the direction of Richard Stabernack in a riding hall in Sickendorf near Lauterbach in Vogelsberg .

Gustav Stabernack GmbH did not return to its place of origin Offenbach after the war, but moved its headquarters to Lauterbach, where a new main plant was built in 1951. In the 1950s, Stabernack developed the laminating technology, which for the first time enabled the production of stable and, at the same time, high-quality printed corrugated cardboard packaging. In the 1960s, the company was one of the first in Europe to start manufacturing displays . In 1958 the branch in Freiensteinau was opened . From 1964 two more plants were built in Fulda and Grebenhain-Oberwald .

In 1990 the family business was divided between the brothers Wilhelm and Gustav Stabernack. The previous branch in Fulda was transferred to Fulda Verpackung & Display GmbH (Gustav Stabernack), which was taken over by the Swedish group SCA in 2002 . It has been owned by the British packaging company DS Smith since 2012 . Both companies began national and international expansion in the 1990s . Gustav Stabernack GmbH (Wilhelm Stabernack) in Lauterbach rose during this time to one of the leading European packaging and display manufacturers through the takeover of Schröter + Bake AG in Neutraubling and the establishment of a new branch in Rumburg (Czech Republic) .

In 1998 the new umbrella brand STI (for: Service-Technology-International ) was introduced for the group of companies . The previous Gustav Stabernack GmbH and its subsidiaries have been operating under the uniform name STI Group ever since . In addition to strategic partnerships with non-European display and packaging manufacturers, a new corrugated cardboard plant was established in Alsfeld in 2002 with STI Corrugated GmbH . In 2007, the STI Group took over the Hungarian folding box manufacturer Petõfi Nyomda Kft. In Kecskemét , and in 2009 the Lilyfield Group, based in Sydney (Australia), was the first production facility outside of Europe . The opening of a location in Gdynia, Poland, also took place in 2009 . In 2009 the STI Group took over the folding box manufacturer Schräder KG in Greven , and in 2010 Line Packaging & Display Ltd. in Gillingham (Great Britain) .

Due to a realignment of the group, the locations in Freiensteinau and Gdynia were closed at the beginning of 2014. The Australian plant was sold to Blue Star in the same year . In Great Britain, the subsidiary there has been operating under the InContrast brand since 2015 . In spring 2019, the company announced its intention to sell the group - but talks with potential investors remained unsuccessful. Due to a lack of interest, the sales efforts were finally stopped again towards the end of 2019. Most of the production in Rumburk, Czech Republic, which was only extensively modernized in 2016, was closed at the end of 2019, and the majority of employees had to end their service shortly before Christmas. A small final production of pre-produced parts will remain in the Czech Republic until further notice.
