Partner of the SUN

The SUN - Stadtwerke Union Nordhessen is an amalgamation of six municipal utilities from Bad Sooden-Allendorf , Eschwege , Homberg (Efze) , Kassel , Witzenhausen and Wolfhagen . The municipal utilities act as shareholders, while the networks remain with the respective municipal utilities. The chosen company structure enables SUN to access the more than 1,100 employees of the various companies.

A total of 290,000 residents in North Hesse are supplied with electricity , gas , water and district heating . Annual sales are around 1,300  GWh of electricity.

Business model

Through the merger, the municipal utilities involved hope to expand synergies, increase efficiencies and further develop municipal supply structures. The focus here is on the decentralized supply of the citizens. Verbund attaches great importance to the regional value chain and the associated promotion of the local and regional job market.

Further business areas are the expansion of renewable energies and support services for municipalities with remunicipalisation and the establishment of their own municipal utilities.

Remunicipalisation

The members of the SUN are convinced that the decentralized supply of the citizens can best be done by municipal utilities. According to SUN, this also means that the networks should belong to the municipalities. However, financial bottlenecks do not allow most municipalities to buy back their networks from grid suppliers or to set up their own municipal utilities. For this reason, SUN offers to take over the technical management.

Expansion of renewable energies

SUN is currently in the planning phase for wind turbines. For this purpose, the necessary location determinations are made and wind measuring systems are set up.

Electric mobility

After the successful completion of the NEMO - Model Region Rhein-Main-Kassel project , more than 70 charging stations for e-mobiles were set up in North Hesse, 18 of them in the city of Kassel. The charging of the electric vehicles is free for the vehicle owner.

The members of the SUN have eight e-cars, one e-scooter, 25 pedelecs and a Segway . All vehicles are used for company-owned trips.

In 2009 one of the partners - Städtische Werke AG - developed a pilot charging station on behalf of SUN, which went online in 2010. Building on this, charging stations were put into operation across the board in North Hesse. Since May 2011, SUN has also been offering the possibility of having e-cars from the car sharing model refueled at charging stations. In the meantime, the technology of the AM spot charging stations from MENNEKES has been installed in all charging stations . Authorization and authentication are carried out using a customer card with RFID technology .
The charging stations are each equipped with two Schuko sockets (230 volts / 16 amps) and two type 2 charging connections , one each with 400 volts / 32 amps and 400 volts / 16 amps.
