Suspa GmbH (own spelling: SUSPA) is a manufacturer of gas pressure springs (short: gas spring), dampers , height adjustments and crash and safety systems for many industries from the furniture to the automotive industry. The company, based in Altdorf near Nuremberg, achieved a turnover of around 208 million euros in 2012 with 1,720 employees worldwide.

Company history

In 1951 Suspa Federungstechnik GmbH was founded and manufactured suspension struts for two-wheelers. In 1959, Suspa invented a damping system for washing machines that eliminates annoying "bouncing" and three years later it is the market leader. The first products for the automotive industry in 1964 were gas pressure springs for raising and lowering tailgates. 1969 Suspa developed the height adjustment for office chairs and the positioning of the backrest. 1973–1978 Suspa expands to the USA and Asia , Suspa develops silicone-cushioned impact absorbers for cars. In 1988 Suspa was the first manufacturer to switch to a three-component water-based paint system and was environmentally friendly by avoiding solvents and amines . 1991 Suspa develops height adjustments for tables and work surfaces. In 1994 a subsidiary is founded in India . The series production of spoiler adjustment systems begins in 1999 and Suspa develops into a system supplier for the automotive industry. A year later, Suspa produces its first crash management system and establishes a plant in the Czech Republic . Production capacities in Asia have been expanded since 2003.

In the summer of 2008, Suspa sells the chair gas springs division to competitor Stabilus in order to concentrate exclusively on the industrial and automotive sectors. In June 2009 Tyrol Equity from Austria acquired 80 percent of the shares in the company. In June 2012 the Tyrolean industrial holding Tyrol Equity sold its shares in Suspa to the private investor group Andlinger & Company GmbH . In summer 2018, Andlinger & Company GmbH sold its company shares to the Belgian entrepreneur Pascal Vanhalst .

The main product is still the gas pressure spring in many different versions, but in recent years Suspa has developed more and more into a system provider, especially for the automotive industry, for which complete adjustment systems or crash management systems are developed and produced. Suspa enriches the gas pressure springs with more and more additional functions. B. table columns that are easily adjustable in height and consist of only one gas spring (product: VariStand).
