The SV Rhenania Würselen 05 is a football club from Würselen in the city region of Aachen , North Rhine-Westphalia . The colors of the association, which was founded in 1905, are black and yellow.

The first 25 years

On August 10, 1905, the founding assembly of SV Rhenania took place. The main focus of the association was on socializing and entertainment. In the beginning there was little understanding for sport, mainly because the training and competition games took place on Sundays in the afternoon and the young people were thus kept away from attending church prayer.

In the winter of 1905 Rhenania won a first match against FC Aldenhoven 2-0. By joining the Rheinisch-Westfälischer Spielverband in 1907, participation in the championship was secured. Rhenania, based on the Kaninsberg sports field, came third in the C-Class. Two years later, in 1910, the black and yellow group champions of the C-class and a 3-2 victory over Cologne's Alemannia became district champions.

From Kaninsberg to Lindenplatz

The place on Kaninsberg was far away. Since there were now numerous other football clubs, fewer and fewer spectators came to "Monte Kanino". With the help of Josef Nacken, the Lindenplatz was created and opened on August 21, 1921. The place was firmly fenced and had a covered grandstand. In more than 30 years, Rhenania has developed into a regionally known association. The Rhenania also played for the Rheingau championship. In 1925, the team was celebrated as the western district and Rheingau champions of the district league.

In 1929 Rhenania was again champion and rose to the second district league. As a newcomer, Rhenania made it into the first district league in 1929/30. Unexpectedly, the team rose again a year later and thus made it into the top German football class at the time.

With the political upheaval in 1933 came a new class division. This fell victim to Rhenania, as the classes were divided according to the size of the cities. In 1935/36, the team won the championship again, the fourth since 1928/29. In the subsequent promotion games, the second place was taken, which meant promotion to the Gauliga Mittelrhein , where the black and yellow reached a number of midfield places.

"Black Devils" from Lindenplatz

Already in 1945 it was Peter Queck, Johann Simons and Willy Franken who, together with some old board members, managed to resume gaming operations. Two years later there was a great success: As champions, the Rhenania finished the group games of the Mittelrhein Football Association. After two playoffs, the Oberliga West was reached. That was the greatest success the Rhenania footballers have ever achieved. The winning team from that time included Jupp Derwall .

At the end of the 1949/50 season, however, Rhenania had to relegate from the Oberliga West to the 2nd League West .

The development until today

After more years of membership in the 2nd league, the Rhenania landed in the association league, regional league and finally in the district class. In June 1990, the Rhenania celebrated another title: after more than four decades, they became champions in the Aachen district league, which meant promotion to the Mittelrhein regional league . Just two years later in the 1992/93 season, the club rose again. In a playoff against Borussia Köln-Kalk , Rhenania Würselen was promoted to the Mittelrhein Association League , the second highest amateur class. Well over 1200 fans of the black and yellow team drove to Oberaussem near Bergheim - the game took place on a neutral pitch - to witness the 3-0 triumph.

In the 1996/97 season one managed under coach Wilfried Hannes promotion to the Oberliga Nordrhein. It was followed by an extremely strong season, because they became runner-up and were still top of the table until three game days before the end. Then they lost to the amateurs of Bayer Leverkusen on Lindenplatz, who had been defeated 1-0 in the first leg at the Ulrich Haberland Stadium . It also succeeded in eliminating Aachen's 1st team in the Alemannia Cup. In the final of the Middle Rhine Cup they lost to the amateurs of Bayer 04 Leverkusen at their home on Lindenplatz. This ended the second successful era of Rhenania.

Those responsible had taken over financially and the club got into its greatest crisis, which ended in bankruptcy . But with the active support of those politically responsible, the association's board managed to turn things around. However, the new start in sport had to be accepted.

In the 2010/11 season it was finally possible to celebrate again: They made it back to the district league A.
