Sra Pathum Palace

The Sra Pathum Palace ( Thai : วัง สระ ปทุม - Wang Sa Pathum, about "Lotus pond palace") is a palace complex in Bangkok , the capital of Thailand . It is also the residence of Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn in the Thai capital.

location

The Sra Pathum Palace is located in the ( Khet ) Pathumwan District , Bangkok. It is bounded in the east by Thanon Phaya Thai (Phaya Thai Street) , in the north by Khlong Saen Saep , in the west by the grounds of Wat Pathum Wanaram and in the south by Thanon Rama 1 (Rama I Street ).

The southern part of the palace grounds is leased to investors and there are now several modern shopping centers, for example the Siam Center , the Siam Discovery Center and the Siam Paragon .

history

Tamnak Yai

The "Tamnak Yai" (Thai: พระ ตำหนัก ใหญ่ - Large Villa ) was designed by the Italian architect Mario Tamagno at the beginning of the 20th century and completed in 1915.

From the reign of King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) until her death on December 17, 1955, Queen Savang Vadhana lived in this villa for 39 years. Her youngest son, Prince Mahidol Adulyadej , his wife Srinagarindra and three royal grandchildren lived here with her . Savang Vadhana also arranged for the current King of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej to marry his Queen Sirikit in Tamnak Yai on April 28, 1950 .

In 1997 the building was renovated on the occasion of King Bhumibol's 80th birthday and completed shortly before the death of Princess Galyani Vadhana , who also lived here for two years.

use

On December 17th, 2008, the “Queen Savang Vadhana Museum” was opened in Tamnak Yai, and she spent the last decades of her life in the Sra Pathum Palace. The opening ceremony was chaired by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
