Saanich is a city in the Canadian province of British Columbia , more precisely on the offshore island of Vancouver Island . It is located north of the provincial capital Victoria and belongs to the Capital Regional District and is part of Greater Victoria . The place name goes back to the local coastal Salish Indians, the Saanich .
