The Saar polygon in Ensdorf (Saar) is a memorial to the memory of the hard coal mining in the Saar district, which finally ended in June 2012 .

The Saar polygon

prehistory

In the area of today's Saarland , hard coal was mined over a period of several centuries . At times the industry was the largest employer in the region. In June 2012 the last mine in Saarland, the Saar mine with its main location in Ensdorf, was closed. Since then, coal mining in the Saar area has been history. Nevertheless, the history of hard coal mining and the traditions associated with it is an essential identification factor for the region.

History of the Saar polygon

The Saar polygon under construction

In the course of the end of hard coal mining, the Bergbauerbe Saar eV association was founded , whose statutory purpose is to promote the industrial culture of mining : have shaped special dimensions, are kept in the collective consciousness. "

In cooperation with RAG AG , which last operated the hard coal mining on the Saar through its subsidiary DSK , an ideas competition for the artistic implementation of the landmark was called. 147 drafts were submitted; The winner of the competition was the Berlin architects Katja Pfeiffer and Oliver Sachse. Her design of a large walk-in sculpture , which "traces diverse mining motifs as a symbol of change in an abstract design language", should form a gateway to the future in the eyes of the beholder. The design language of the puristic steel lattice construction is intended to express the inseparability of origin and future in the state and to show the classic connection between coal, steel and energy in Saarland.

The large accessible sculpture was erected in the spring of 2016 and, after completion, was on 16./17. Inaugurated in September 2016 and presented to the public. The construction costs of around two million euros were financed by the Bergbauerbe Saar eV association, RAG AG, the RAG Foundation , the Saarland state government and donations. Donors could symbolically buy a step inside the polygon for € 1000; A plaque with the names of the donors was placed on each step.

Location

The Saar polygon is located on the Duhamel mine dump in Ensdorf, the mine dump of the Saar mine. This dump with an area of around 50 hectares rises around 150 meters above the surrounding Saar valley. Due to its exposed position, the polygon is visible from all directions.

Data

The accessible monument is around 30 meters high. Precisely 132 steps at a height of 25 meters lead from both sides to the 35 meter cross section. The viewing platform weighs around 60 tons.

description

The Saar polygon is designed in such a way that it has a different shape from every direction: rectangular archway, triangle standing on top or base, cross with horizontal line. In plan it has the shape of a label.
