The Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago ( Spanish Archipiélago de Sabana-Camagüey ) is a chain of islands off the north coast of Cuba , which consists of a large number of cays . It is located on the coasts of the provinces of Matanzas , Villa Clara , Sancti Spíritus , Ciego de Ávila and Camagüey . The archipelago extends from north-west to south-east over a length of 475 km and can be geographically divided into a north-western section ( Archipiélago de Sabana ) and a south-eastern section ( Archipiélago de Camagüey ).
The Sabana Camagüey Archipelago is home to flamingos and numerous marine animals and plants that make their home in this aquatic ecosystem . The diverse flora and fauna are protected with money from an international aid fund . There are more than 35 protected areas, especially the Bahía de Buena Vista and the Caguanes National Park .
The beaches and coral reefs of the archipelago offer space for numerous leisure activities. The islands of the Jardines del Rey , Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo , are particularly popular with tourists.
