Sabine Maier (born 1971 in Styria ) is an Austrian media artist and art photographer.

Life

Sabine Maier was born and raised in the Murau district in Styria. She left home when she was 15. In order to earn money, she broke off the HBLA and began an apprenticeship as a pharmacist and photographer, which she completed with preference in 1989. Immediately afterwards she went to London , completed a language course in Cambridge , worked in antique shops as a restorer and lived in an artists' commune. In 1992 she had to return to Austria for bureaucratic reasons. In Graz she got to know the life and death of an artist through Othmar Krenn , Wolfgang Bauer and Werner Schwab , was a member of a punk band and took part in many art events. In 1995 she went to Vienna and in 1997 completed the master class for photography at the Höhere Graphische Bundes-Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt . During her apprenticeship, she worked at night in a pharmacy and in a drug factory. She later worked in the design department of ORF and as a freelance photographer for Ogilvi & Partner, the independent theaters in Cologne and the United Theaters in Vienna . In 1999 she founded the Machfeld art label together with Michael Mastrototaro , under whose pseudonym many of her works are presented. Since then she has been working as an independent international artist. On the basis of grants and artist -in-residence invitations, she worked and taught in Guatemala, Mexico, Spain, Canada and for years in South Africa ( Johannesburg ).

Sabine Maier works across all disciplines in the field of artistic photography, media art, radio art, art in public spaces (installation and buildings) as well as staging in collaboration with writers and composers. She not only works with the media, but also with the media, with the many dimensions of the media, the technical conditions of old and new media. Since 1998 she has been working as a freelance artist in the field of photography, installation and visual arts. Each of her works of art presents itself as a point of contact that is often located in unimaginable and hidden spheres for the viewer - below the level of our ordinary existence. In her work, the outlines of the point of contact are precisely defined, but often overlaid, nested and condensed, depending on the field of contact in which the work was created. The concept determines the materials and the forms of their artistic work. This not only results in photo series as such, but mostly spatial stagings consisting of several works and executed in the form of different media.
