Sakhalin Hokkaidō Tunnel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sakhalin-Hokkaidō Tunnel (or possibly the Sakhalin-Hokkaidō Bridge) is a proposed link under the La Pérouse Strait between the Russian island of Sakhalin and the Japanese island of Hokkaidō . According to Russian estimates, the cost will be around $ 50 billion.

Tunnel project

The tunnel would connect about 40 to 45 km between Cape Crillon in Russia and Cape Soya in Japan.

The project would be an alternative to the Japan-Korea tunnel , as Russia is already well advanced in the planning and construction of many of the necessary connections from Sakhalin to the mainland and because the tunnel is considerably shorter than the Japan-Korea tunnel between Japan and Korea would be.

Gauge

The railway on Sakhalin largely has a gauge of 1520 mm Russian broad gauge . The Japanese railways network has a gauge of 1067 mm, or the standard gauge of 1435 mm in the Shinkansen network . The rail networks are therefore not compatible. It is unclear which gauge would be used for the proposed tunnel and associated infrastructure, or whether a multi- rail track or a gauge changeover facility will be used.
